ASBESTOS SAFETY
Under new legislation if you own, occupy, manage or have responsibilities for premises which may contain asbestos, you will have a legal duty to manage the risk it poses to health (or a duty to co-operate with whoever manages that risk).
We are an experienced group of practical safety professionals based in Chelmsford, Essex, and we specialise in creating the management tools that employers must have to comply with safety legislation.
By letting us act as your asbestos safety consultants you can be assured that you will be able to comply fully with all current legislation thus allowing you to concentrate on other areas of your business.
The following chart explains what the new law requires you to do:
| What you must do: |
How Fifth Avenue can help: |
- Find out if asbestos is present and its condition
- You must assume that asbestos is present unless you have strong evidence it is not
|
A survey by a UKAS-accredited asbestos surveyor should be commissioned |
- Keep an up-to-date record of the location and condition of asbestos materials on the premises
- Assess the risk to health from these materials
|
Where asbestos is present, the survey will include a condition assessment and recommended action plan |
- Prepare a plan that sets out in detail how you are going to manage the risk from this material
|
We will work with you to prepare a plan to manage the risk. This might typically include:
- Sealing the material to prevent fibres escaping
- Restricting access - stops people disturbing or inhaling fibres
- Removal where risk is high (and sealing or restricting access are not viable options)
|
- Take whatever steps are needed to put that plan into action
- Review and monitor your plan periodically
- Provide information on the location and condition of the material to anyone who is liable to work on or disturb it
|
Where the material is not being removed, we can develop access controls to prevent accidental exposure and systems to enable maintenance work or alterations to be performed safely. We can also carry out annual reviews for you. |
