Fire Safety
Fires can happen in the most unlikely of circumstances so it’s important that everyone knows about it straight away and is able to get out quickly. It’s not just about life safety however, because many businesses that have a serious fire go out of business during the following 12 months because customers simply find other suppliers whilst you are out of action.
You have a legal duty to maintain an up to date fire risk assessment – and you commit an offence simply by not having done so. If you want to try to do it yourself we would strongly suggest you read through the official guide that most applies to your premises and see how you get on, but there is a lot to know and if you feel you would prefer a professional to do it for you – well that’s what we are here for.Give us a call if you have any questions or you would like us to come and see you for a free consultation with no obligation. We’ve been working in fire safety since 1973.
Fire Risk Assessment
In any workplace there will be a range of fire hazards (things that could start a fire and things that could burn). Begin your assessment by identifying those hazards then list alongside them the things you do (or have already done) to stop that happening e.g. careless smoking can cause fires but you banned smoking in the workplace.
Next you look at how people will know when a fire has started – will you see it quickly or will it be hidden? – should you have fire detectors? – how will everyone by warned? – do you need a fire alarm?
Then you look at how people will be able to escape – how far they have to go to reach a fire exit – will they be trapped or do they have a choice of routes? - are the exits easy to open and do they lead to a place of safety?
